14.1 Objective
14.1.1 This Regulatory Standard - NR aims to establish requirements for the safe operation of furnaces.
14.2 Scope of Application
14.2.1 The prevention measures stipulated in this Standard apply to organizations that use furnaces in their production processes.
14.3 Prevention Measures
14.3.1 Furnaces for all purposes shall be stably constructed and lined with refractory materials, ensuring radiant heat does not exceed the tolerance limits specified in NR-15 - Unhealthy Activities and Operations.
14.3.2 Furnaces shall be installed:
a) in accordance with official technical standards;
b) in places ensuring safety and comfort for workers;
c) to prevent accumulation of harmful gases and high temperatures in adjacent areas.
14.3.2.1 The ladders and platforms of furnaces shall be constructed to ensure workers safe access and task performance.
14.3.3 Furnaces using gaseous or liquid fuels shall be equipped with protection systems to prevent:
a) explosion caused by heating flame failure and/or burner actuation failure;
b) flame flashback.
14.3.4 Furnaces shall be fitted with properly sized chimneys for smooth discharge of combustion gases in compliance with official technical standards.
